My chalkboards can be very plain, using just white pens, chalk or paint
for menu boards or more elaborate to advertise special events or
promotions as the customer requires. The boards are all painted for durability. They are perfect for
outside boards, with some of the boards lasting a couple of years or
more if necessary.
All done with a brush, I use either acrylic or enamel paints depending
on the durability required. I have painted on a variety of surfaces,
walls, inside and out, doors, windows, and even a boat, using a variety
of lettering.
I prefer to work in a bold, stylized, colourful, form, which is strongly influenced by my New Zealand, pacific background. Most of my work is in oil as it gives a depth of colour and sharpness I find, not always achievable with acrylic.
The murals are commissioned by mainly brewery chains, gourmet pubs and
wine bars. Some were for the children’s play areas and others to
enhance and enliven the atmosphere.
The caricatures have been mainly commissions or gifts for special occasions. These have included birthdays and retirements.
I like to incorporate the interesting, unusual characteristics, quirks
and traits that make up the individuality of the subjects personality,
incorporating their hobbies and life style and portraying these in a
humorous and fun way.
